4 Easy-to-Duplicate Habits of Ultra-Successful Chiropractors

Chiropractic practice and business success is multi-faceted. Much has been written and spoken of in regards to the rational actions needed to have an epic practice, and some of it has actually been pretty good.

But I took a unique approach in building my huge multi-chiropractor family practice, and am happy to share both my strategy and observations.

After spending countless hours and thousands of dollars attending the popular chiropractic seminars, I soon realized their limitations and short-comings. (See my last article Chiropractic Coaching and Consulting is Out; Mentoring is In).

So, I began seeking out chiropractors that were truly successful and personally visiting them. I spent time with dozens of these epic chiropractors, asking questions and taking notes, but mostly watching them and observing their nuances. Here are some of the common habits I saw:

1)   They have a strong identity. Their understanding of what chiropractic is and their role in it is crystal clear. Ask them to recite a Chiropractic elevator speech and you’ll typically hear something similar to “I am a doctor who helps people by releasing their in-born healing ability. I specialize in detecting and correcting nerve system interference in the spine caused by misalignments. This is called vertebral subluxation and nobody can be truly healthy unless these are found and adjusted.” How is your Chiropractic elevator speech?

2) They keep learning and modifying their procedures to develop as chiropractic craftsmen. Although their “tool box” is primarily the chiropractic adjustment, they’ve mastered numerous methods of adjusting to better suit differences in their patients. When is the last time you added to your “tool box”?

3) They are persistent. Changing locations, practice names, staff, websites, or even spouses is nearly non-existent. They stick with what they’ve got and make it work. They don’t fall for “The grass being greener on the other side of the hill”, but tweaking and modifying procedures is common and done to adapt to external changes. Chasing after the latest craze or fad is looked at as abandoning ship. Their focus is on their higher purpose, not their bottom line. Where is your focus?

4) They have unshakeable integrity. Hiding cash from the IRS, billing for services never rendered, up-coding procedure codes, and making unrealistic proclamations about their skills is not seen. These docs sleep peacefully and it shows. Patients are naturally attracted to this environment. How are you sleeping?

One of these epic chiropractors pulled me aside one day while I visited him and said “I count my ability to truly help people as the largest part of my reward for being a doctor.”

Chiropractic Coaching and Consulting is Out; Mentoring is In

Chiropractic coaching and consulting coming to an end?

Times are changing. And it’s time for chiropractors to change some habits that have been limiting their prosperity.

I can think of several limiting habits that I want to make you aware of; but let’s start with chiropractic coaching.

If you are like most DCs, you’ve likely already experienced the typical chiropractic coaching program. It usually involves a highly charismatic speaker, whose main talent really involves rousing a large crowd with witty quips, emotional stories, some humor, and then a clever sales pitch for their services. Got to admit – these characters can be very talented and entertaining. I enjoy the rah-rah sessions on occasion also. But that is usually about where it ends.

There are exceptions of course, but chiropractors who buy in to these coaching programs commonly end up very disappointed if not frustrated and confused. They eventually learn that the supposed coach has got numerous problems of their own such as failed marriages, broken families, substance abuse issues, financial struggles, practices with high turnover of staff and/or patients, and most commonly – spiritual confusion if not a New Age type Godless belief system.

There is a long list of chiropractic coaches who have ended up on the rubbish pile of legal troubles, financial ruin, or worse.

Now if you’ve got a coach that is an exception to this and you’re benefiting, then by all means keep it up. But typically, after spending thousands of dollars and loads of time, DCs come to realize that these characters are not who they should be learning from, and that Chiropractic seminars are just not enough. Once back at the office the doctors and staff ask “OK, that was nice, now what do we do?” And if there is phone support it can be woefully lacking.

So, what can a chiropractor do? Where can one get the sound guidance and advice that can lead them to a higher level of production, prosperity, and a peaceful congruency of practice, business, family, marriage, and eventually a dream  chiropractic retirement?

After 30 years as a DC operating a highly successful multi-DC family practice, I’ve been through the ringer of the typical chiropractic coach described above not just once, but several times. Thankfully, my discernment prompted me to exit their services ASAP. I eventually found the answers I needed from one-on-one chiropractic mentoring. Yes, mentoring not coaching.

Mentoring involves much more personalization of guidance. It enables the mentor to focus their advice on the specific needs of the specific DC. Let’s face it, each DC is essentially an artist. That is what makes us beautifully unique. This means each DC has struggles that differ from others. A chiropractic mentor, especially one who has already blazed a trail of real success, can direct their advice to that individual’s particular issues and counsel them to a solution. This results in significantly less cost, less time, less travel, and more benefit for the DC under mentoring.

Mentoring versus coaching produces much more growth of the doctor as a person, and that’s what matters in obtaining the harmony between life and business that all doctors need and want.Chiropractic practice success is multifaceted. Coaches bark out orders to a team. Mentors learn the intricacies of an individuals persona and goals, then provides careful guidance. Remember, you are a talented loving doctor, not some instrument trained to score points.

I realize that my speaking out like this will likely result in ridicule, perhaps even some  chiropractic consultants and coaches will mention my name as part of their charismatic comedy routine while on stage. And that’s OK; I hope I hear it so I can laugh too. As Dr BJ Palmer used to say “Go ahead and say what you wish about me; just spell my name right so people can find me.” LOL!

But I want DCs to really thrive. We’ve been given this wonderful gift of chiropractic and I want more of the public to have it. Traditional practice management gurus and coaches just ain’t cuttin it anymore. It’s a new day!

My dream of many prosperous chiropractors happily serving all of humanity will only come true when chiropractors are individually mentored not entertained.
